MENTORSHIP

Synonyms: Adviser, Coach, Trainer, Counsellor, Teacher.

Wherever you want to go, someone would have been there. You get to the destination faster when you follow the route that others have travelled before. Mentors are coaches and teachers, who have travelled through certain tracks ahead of you and hence can show you exactly how to get there. Mentorship is when a more experienced person guides a less experienced person. Mentors offer career advice, share experiences and clarify questions to the mentee.

Out of several means of competence development programs, mentorship comes out tops as it can advance your proficiencies and capabilities exponentially. Identifying and following a mentor is really amazing. A successful mentorship relationship leads to many positive ends. It does not only lead to knowledge transfer, it also culminates into a lasting business alliance between the mentor and the mentee. In short, there is no disadvantage to developing a working mentorship program.

The good thing is that you can get a mentor at any level, either as a rookie or as an expert. Therefore, the best time to get a mentor is now. In order to be relevant in your chosen field, you need a mentor. The most effective way to develop desirable soft skills is to identify people with such skills and follow them. Fill your skill gap with mentors. Endeavour to spend time with a mentor to get the most out of the relationship.

If you see yourself as a mentor, seize the opportunity and pour yourself into someone that needs direction. Being a mentor transfers your experience and know-how to a mentee. Trust me, it is a win-win situation. Mentors have a feeling of achievement and fulfilment as they touch lives and watch mentees grow to become better than they used to be. So, be the mentor to that young vibrant rookie and make a subject-matter expert out of him.

This is my power word for today; get a mentor or be the mentor.
